What “Custom” Actually Means

When people see the words custom itinerary, they sometimes imagine a generic tour with a few optional extras bolted on. That’s not what we mean.

A truly custom day in Tangier starts with a conversation, not a brochure. Before the morning of your visit, your guide will have asked: Are you a history person or more of a food person? Do you have small children? Are you comfortable walking for two hours straight, or would you prefer a slower pace with longer stops? Do you want to interact with locals, or do you prefer to observe quietly?

The answers to those questions shape everything.

A Real Day: An Example Family Itinerary

Here’s a real example — a family of four (two adults, two children aged 8 and 11) spending a full day in Tangier. Names changed.

9:00 AM — Guide Meets You at Your Hotel

No waiting at a meeting point. Your guide arrives at your hotel lobby or riad — wherever you’re staying. The day starts with five minutes of conversation, not a speech. The guide confirms the plan, adjusts for the morning energy of the kids, and explains what the day will look like.

One small but important detail: the guide knows Tangier’s traffic rhythms. If you’re staying near the port, there’s a particular time of morning when the Rue de la Liberté becomes a bottleneck. Your guide will have already planned around it.

9:30 AM — Walking the Old Medina: Layers, Not Landmarks

Most group tours rush through the medina in forty-five minutes, pointing at the main gates and moving on.

A private guide slows it down. You walk the same streets, but you notice different things. The Portuguese stonework on a window frame. The French tiles on a doorway. The smell of fresh-baked bread from a bakery that’s been in the same family for three generations.

With children along, the guide adapts: shorter explanations, more interactive details. What do you think this building was used for? Kids often ask the best questions — and they get real answers.

💡 The medina is best in the morning, before the cruise day-trippers arrive. Your guide knows this. You’ll have the narrow lanes largely to yourselves.

11:00 AM — The Kasbah & Museum Gardens

The Kasbah sits at the highest point of the old city, and the views across the Strait of Gibraltar are genuinely breathtaking on a clear morning.

The Kasbah museum is small but rich. A licensed guide can pull out details that no audio tour would mention — the story of the British consul who lived here, the garden layout that still follows a 17th-century design.

For the children: the ramparts and sea views are endlessly dramatic. They’ll remember this part.

12:30 PM — Lunch Break, Chosen for You

This is where a good guide earns quiet loyalty. They won’t take you to the tourist restaurant on the main square. They’ll take you to a small, family-run place in the medina where the harira is made fresh that morning, the bread arrives warm, and the price is honest.

The guide eats with you if you’d like, or gives you space. Your call.

2:00 PM — Cap Spartel & the Caves of Hercules

For full-day visitors, the afternoon stretch to Cap Spartel is worth every minute. You’re heading to the northwestern tip of Africa — the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea.

The Caves of Hercules are genuinely dramatic: limestone chambers carved by millennia of wave action, with a cave opening shaped like a map of Africa. The guide will tell you the mythology, the geology, and the modern history — including the artists and writers who used to gather here in the 1950s.

For families, this is the high point of the day. Plenty of space to move, dramatic scenery, and a story that even an eight-year-old can hold onto.

4:30 PM — Mint Tea & the Grand Socco

No day in Tangier ends properly without mint tea. Your guide knows a terrace overlooking the Grand Socco — the old market square — where you can sit, watch the city move below you, and talk about what the day meant.

This is also where the guide checks in: Was there anything you wanted to see that you didn’t? Is there a souk you’d like to browse? Is there time for one more thing?

Sometimes, the best part of the afternoon is unplanned.

6:00 PM — Return to Your Hotel

Your guide walks or drives you back to your starting point. The day ends with a handshake and, usually, a few WhatsApp messages later from families who’ve since returned home and want to come back.

The Difference That Makes All the Difference

No two days we run are identical. The itinerary above happens to work well for families. A solo traveller who wants to spend three hours in one neighbourhood talking to artisans and tracing street art looks completely different. A couple who wants to focus on food and cooking history looks different again.

That’s the point. The guide’s expertise isn’t just knowing Tangier — it’s knowing how to shape what Tangier shows you based on who you are.
